Natural light photography is style of portrait photography that has become very popular in the last few years. My style of natural light photography usually involves an outdoor setting. My favorite spots to shoot photography include parks, waterside, open fields, train tracks and old buildings. I also have a lovely yard with woods, flowers and a pond.
I will travel to any setting of your choice as well. I love to explore new places and no setting is off limits to me. Don’t be afraid to ask if you have an unconventional place in mind. I have done photography shoots in cemeteries, golf courses, on trampolines, in parking lots and on beaches. If you have a great place that you have always wanted to use as a setting, I will be happy to accommodate your vision. Travel within a 40 mile radius is included in your fee. Please contact me for travel rates beyond 40 miles.
My goal with your photography session is to capture your children and/or family in a fun, relaxed and happy setting. I will greet you in casual clothes and a big smile and spend some time getting to know your children and family before we start. I will play with them and interact with the older kids to get them to relax. I always ask that your young children bring a favorite toy or electronic and even a pacifier. Kids love to show off their prized possessions and I like to include them in at least one or two of their pictures. This is who they are and what they like at this time in their lives and it will be a wonderful memory of what life was like for them at this age.
Some children do better when their parents aren’t around so I may take them off alone (I make it like we are sneaking away and they love that) and take pictures without mama and daddy around. I love to have fun and I may ask you to do something unconventional or “out there”. Even if you think it is weird, go with it. I promise you will have a blast.
I am not much into formally posed pictures. I will have you interact with each other and your children so there may be pictures where someone will not be looking directly at the camera, more of a candid response…I will usually stand back and take photos when you don’t know it. I will make it easy to capture your real smiles, happy laughter and spontaneous family interaction. You won’t hear me say “Say Cheese”, but you may hear me make funny and surprising noises to get your children (big and little) to smile or laugh. Spontaneous laughter produces the best pictures.
I prefer to work with natural light, so sessions are generally scheduled first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon or evening when the sun is lower in the sky. This produces a softer and more golden light. Don’t worry though, if your scheduled day turns out to be cloudy, some of the best pictures are the result of “no squinting”. Please consider your child’s nap time when picking a time. Sessions usually last from 1-3 hours, although newborn sessions may last longer.
Newborn sessions are best when scheduled within the first 10 days of life, so contact me when you’re expecting and we can schedule an approximate time period. Be sure to let me know once you deliver so we can schedule an exact date. Newborn sessions generally last longer so mamas have time to feed, change and comfort their babies. I usually like to have the babies in a deep sleep, so I don’t like to rush.
For most sessions, keep clothes simple but fun. Wear colors that are already in your house so when you hang your portraits, they will fit right in with your decor. The colors in your home tend to be your favorite colors anyway. Try to avoid busy patterns near the face or everyone in different patterns. Consider where you envision hanging your portraits in your home when selecting your wardrobe. Jeans or khaki’s and white shirts are nice, but bright and coordinating colors in the outfits are way more fun and lend an air to the candid shot. Fun tutu’s and funky outfits look great in the resulting portrait.

Wardrobe changes are welcome. Favorite accessories such as hats, scarves and jackets are always encouraged and can pump up a shot! Newborns are usually photographed in their “birthday suits” but heirloom or favorite outfits are fine. Remember though, the less handling of the newborns, the better. There are adorable hats and blankets for newborns so check around on the internet (www.etsy.com is a great site) for accessories…
